Day of Mourning held in North Bay

About two dozen people took part in the annual Day of Mourning in North Bay Thursday morning.  The event is held each year to get governments to improve health and safety laws so workers aren’t killed on the job.

The rally heard that when a person heads off to work, they have the right to leave that workplace healthy.  This year’s theme was banning the use of asbestos nation-wide.

The compound, which is still found in many older buildings, kills thousands of workers each year.  Henri Giroux, the president of the local labour council, says in the 1980’s he found asbestos in the Casselholme nursing home.

Giroux says there are safe alternatives to asbestos so it can be replaced and still provide jobs.  Deputy mayor Sheldon Forgette read a proclamation where council recognized today’s event.
