Labour president reacts to bread plant closure

The decision by Canada Bread to close its North Bay operation this summer has sparked an angry comment from the president of the North Bay and District Labour Council.  Henri Giroux says the last 20 years have seen wages of corporate heads sky-rocket but not those of workers.

Giroux says instead, they get laid off on a regular basis.  The labour council president says the latest layoffs are a growing sign of poverty in North Bay.

Giroux says there’s a correlation between the sudden rise of pay-day loan shops in the city and people losing their jobs.  Canada Bread is transferring operations to its other plants in Ontario and Quebec in early August and will lay off 62 people.
