Be bear wise

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has some tips on how to avoid bear encounters.  As a rule, bears avoid people and a good way to keep them far from you is to make noise as you go through the woods.

While in the bush, don’t wear headphones because you want to hear what’s going on around you.  Also avoid strong fragrances because bears have a great sniffer, and you don’t want to make them curious about what they’re smelling.

The MNRF says if you’re hiking with your dog, make sure it’s under control because the barking could lead a bear right to you.  When picking berries, look-up from time to time just to make sure a bear hasn’t wandered into the berry patch looking for food.

And put food in sealed containers so bears don’t pick up the scent and make a beeline for you.
