Telephone refund scam popping up in North Bay

If anyone calls you saying you’ve received a refund from a company that’s gone out of business, hang up.

According to North Bay Police, a resident received a call on Monday night from a man claiming he worked for a bank, and that a company that had gone out of business was looking to give him a refund.

The man on the phone asked for remote access to his computer, and for him to log into his bank account. The resident then noticed money being transferred out of one of his accounts to another.

The man on the phone said a portion of that transfer was the refund, but the resident had to send the balance to a foreign company, in order to secure the full refund. The resident did not transfer the funds, and immediately contacted his bank.

If you run into this scam, just hang up and call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
