Near North District School Board trustee weighs in on EQAO results

The EQAO results weren’t especially good for students in grades 3, 6 and 9 at the local school boards in North Bay. Near North District School Board trustee, David Thompson, says the results are only a snap shot, but they are taken seriously. The board has some room to improve, but there are some areas that have grown over the last year.

Thompson believes the current way the results are obtained could be improved. He’s heard from students in Grade 3 and 6 that stress out over the EQAO tests. Thompson thinks there could be better ways to test and get better results, but it is a provincial decision. Thompson says he’s concerned about math scores being way down, which is a province wide issue. The board is encouraged by the reading and writing scores of their students, and will work to improve the math score.

The basis of the EQAO test results is the percentage of students in a given school board at the provincial average in Ontario. That number is provided to school boards, but Thompson says that number doesn’t take into consideration a lot of variables. Variables like students identified with special needs aren’t factored in. Senior members have been working since the summer to improve math scores, and Thompson is confident their staff is going to move forward and the students will benefit.
