Downtown Waterfront Master Plan options presented to the public

People had a chance last night to have their say on what the future of the Downtown-Waterfront area might look like. Consulting firm BrookMcIlroy was hired by the city to oversee the master plan, and it came up with three options for the public to view. Manager of Planning Services, Bev Hillier, says the City is trying to represent the information and visions that people had expressed to them from previous consultations they had throughout the summer. Putting those ideas to paper turned into the options presented.

The first option includes the cost of a road connection between the downtown and the waterfront. That option would be more expensive than the second option, which calls for a walking or cycling connection. One of the things involved is a splash pad, which is proposed for near the Discovery North Bay Museum, but also for the Waterfront. One proposal calls for a skateboard park and a basketball court, while another calls for a playground equipment area. Another proposal calls for Oak Street to be become a two-way street. All three options call for a restaurant on the waterfront.

Hillier says about 50 or so people turned out for the workshop. Lots of good discussion took place, where people discussed themes they liked and didn’t like. When the final option is crafted and presented to City Council, it will likely include pieces from all 3 of the options that were presented. The next step moving forward is to take all the information gathered, and actually write out a structured and detailed policy. Hillier says they expect to do more stakeholder discussion through the fall, and then broader public consultations will happen in mid to late January. The City has been pleased with the amount of interest and feedback the public has shown to this point on the Downtown Waterfront Master Plan. Hillier hopes people will stay engaged as the process moves forward.
