One school board in Ontario only possible if people ask for referendum

Calls for one school board in Ontario have been getting louder lately. The Rainbow School Board’s recent call to the province to move to a one school board system has local support. Near North Board Chair David Thompson says the board issued a similar motion a few years ago, but nothing ever came of it.

Thompson says he’s been supportive of one school board for years now, but doesn’t believe the government is listening. He says if enough people believe in this, they need to take their message to the provincial government. Thompson says the only way the government is going to listen is if they have a referendum in 2018.

He believes people should be asking for a referendum as part of the ballot box question when they’re electing an MPP. Thompson says that way the government of the day will know that the majority of Ontarians support one school board. He says that will end the debate, democracy speaks and a referendum is the answer right now.
