Coldest Night of the Year surpasses fundraising goal

The Coldest Night of the Year event in North Bay was a success once again this year, with hundreds of people hittingĀ the streets in the city’s downtown. Gathering Place Executive Director, Dennis Chippa says more than 200 participants raised north of $60,000, which surpassed their fundraising goal of $55,000. The money will help to cover the soup kitchen’s operating expenses for several months. Chippa says that includes food, heat and hydro, as well as keeping the doors open and keeping the Gathering Place functioning.

North Bay’s Coldest Night has become the Gathering Place’s largest fundraiser, and is part of a national event that’s held in more than 100 communities across the country. The Coldest Night event allows people to get a sense of the difficulties the homeless and less fortunate in communities face. Chippa says while Saturday may not have technically been the coldest night of the year, the cold and windy weather gave a snapshot of what the homeless face on a daily basis.
