Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli spars with Finance Minister Charles Sousa over lack of money for Ontario in federal budget

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli got into it with Finance Minister Charles Sousa in the legislature at Queen’s Park over Ontario not getting much out of the 2017 federal budget. In addressing the budget on Wednesday, Sousa said it’s a budget that talks about maintaining the status quo. He added they’ll continue to collaborate with the federal government to move forward on what’s in the best interest of Ontarians and to grow our economy.

Fedeli says he was in the room when Sousa was describing the federal budget and what it meant for the province, and says he looked dejected, deflated, despondent and discouraged. Fedeli says his body language was quite shocking while he was trying to come up with something exciting, but all he could say was it’s a status quo budget.

Fedeli says the minister was upset that he didn’t get anything for Ontario, despite the fact Premier Kathleen Wynne stumped for Justin Trudeau during the 2015 federal election. Fedeli says Sousa was looking for relief for the housing market in Toronto that’s on fire right now, and he didn’t get that. He says he was looking for increased healthcare funding, and that didn’t happen. Fedeli added the reason he got into it with Sousa in the legislature is because he’s going to have to rewrite his budget after this. Fedeli says that’s because Sousa had been planning for all these billions from the federal government that didn’t materialize.

Fedeli says if this was a federal conservative government budget, Sousa would’ve had passion and been pounding the table in opposition to Ontario being shut out. Fedeli finished by saying that because it was their Liberal cousins, Sousa tried to play his cards close to his vest but he doesn’t have much of a poker face.
