CUPE representative responds to claims made by CAS Executive Director

CUPE Social Services Coordinator Bev Patchell has issued a statement about claims made by Children’s Aid Society Executive Director Gisele Hebert. The statement reads Hebert has made claims in the media suggesting that the injunction granted last week was issued in response to evidence of serious incidents on the picket lines. Patchell says Justice Rivard’s order was made based on a negotiated protocol agreed by both the society and the union and not based on any findings of fact. She says to imply otherwise is both irresponsible and potentially damaging to the reputation of workers who were locked out of their jobs at Nipissing and Parry Sound CAS on December 23rd.

After the injunction was granted against the Children’s Aid picketers on Friday, Hebert said there were some incidents that occurred that really concerned the organization. She added it was done to ensure services wouldn’t be compromised. CUPE Local 2049 President Debbie Hill said at the time she didn’t have any concerns about their conduct on the picket line.

Locked out CUPE workers will be holding a rally on Friday from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm on Main Street where they will be joined by CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn and CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Charles Fleury.
