Scollard students picked for prestigious programs

Three students at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall have been accepted into a couple of prestigious programs this summer.  Grade 11 student Matthew McParland has been invited to take part in the SHAD program while Samantha McKinley and Sarah Selander of Grade 9 have been accepted into the Think About Math   (TAM)  program.  TAM is an elite program for girls offered at the University of Waterloo during the summer.  The event is designed as a workshop to show girls that math can be fun and relevant and can also lead to exciting careers.  The SHAD program, meanwhile, that Matthew McParland is part of provides a month long experience at a host Canadian university where exceptional students focus on STEAM which stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.  SHAD accepts about 800 students each year from across Canada and abroad.  In the selection process, SHAD looks for students who have a flair about them, are creative and take the initiative.  SHAD students are leaders in their schools who also volunteer in the communities they live in and often are gifted musicians, artists or athletes.  SHAD helps students realize their potential as future leaders and change makers.

As for both Scollard girls, once at Waterloo, they’ll learn about the stock market, the environment and social networking applications like Facebook.  They’ll also be told about women who are mathematics graduates and what careers the subject matter allowed them to pursue.  The workshops for the girls will be run by professors at the university.
