Five students from Canadore College are headed to Canada’s largest skilled trade and technology competition this weekend. Aircraft maintenance students David De La Mothe and David Gellately are slotted in the post-secondary aircraft maintenance competition. Building construction student Andrew Swan will be testing his skills in the post-secondary carpentry competition and culinary management students Jeffery Robinson and Lukas Zajicek, both from North Bay, will be in the post-secondary culinary arts competition.
Canadore Vice President of Academic, Mary O’Farrell-Bowers says it’s an amazing accomplishment to achieve this level of competition alone, and they’re extremely proud of their students. She says competing at this level takes a lot of focus, talent, creativity, professionalism and trade-specific knowledge.
The Skills Ontario Competition hosts 68 skilled trades and technologies competitions for students at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as post-secondary and apprenticeships up to the age of 29. Competitors have the opportunity to win a gold, silver, or bronze medal. Select competitions may also provide opportunities at monetary awards, scholarships, and job offers. Finalists will also have the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition being held in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
