No charges laid following collision on Lakeshore Drive

An investigation into a collision between a cyclist and a car on Lakeshore Drive yesterday afternoon has ended with no charges laid. The collision happened on Lakeshore Drive at Judge Avenue just after 2:00pm, and the woman riding the bike was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. She was later released.

After investigation, with the assistance of a North Bay Police Service Forensic Identification Officer, police concluded the car was heading northbound towards the overpass from Lakeshore Drive when it crossed Judge Avenue on a green light and struck the bicycle. The cyclist failed to yield to traffic while riding eastbound on Judge Avenue across Lakeshore Drive, along the pedestrian crosswalk, and on the wrong side of the road.

The police want to warn cyclists that under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, a bicycle is a vehicle. That mean’s cyclists must ride on the right-hand side of the road, with the flow of traffic. They have to stay as close to the right edge of the road whenever possible and obey all traffic signs and signals. When using any pedestrian crosswalks, they have to walk their bicycles across.
