North Bay Police are alerting people about an ongoing inheritance letter scam in the area. A North Bay resident recently received a letter in the mail describing the recent death of a fictional wealthy foreigner who shared the recipient’s last name.

The goal of the letter is to lure the recipient into providing personal information to the writer so they can cash in on the attractive inheritance. The fraudster’s ultimate goal is to either steal the victim’s identity or money.

Police are asking people not to respond if they receive a letter like this one. Instead, they say you should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre here in North Bay. They can be reached at 1-888-495-8501 Monday to Friday between 8:30am to 5:00pm or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
