Nipissing University is celebrating 25 years of education this year and to mark the occasion it’s putting on a special presentation of what the world could be like in another 25 years. The school has five of its faculty members and former graduates talking about what might be possible by 2042. One of the speakers is Doctor Jeff Kleim, a former Nipissing graduate, and he’ll talk about engineering new brains.
Another speaker is Doctor Phil Nickerson, a senior research associate at the Krembli Research Institute at Toronto’s Western Hospital. Nickerson’s topic is about the future of stem cell therapy in the eye. Nickerson believes that by 2042 scientists will have moved from the theoretical application of stem cell work to the actual application. Nickerson is a firm believer that cell-based medicine has tremendous potential to actually cure diseases instead of just treating symptoms. Nickerson adds what’s needed is a rational and pragmatic approach to this type of medicine.
Each presentation is five minutes long and the location is The Grande Event Centre on Main Street. The event is free, is open to the public and begins at 7:00pm. The evening has been dubbed NU2042 and the plan is to hold more NU2042 events later this year. Those later presentations are scheduled for September 24th, October 18th, November 9th, and December 7th. The location for each presentation will again be The Grande Event Centre.
