Newly renewed transit deal to benefit the city and Nipissing University

City council’s decision to renew the transit service agreement with Nipissing University is expected to generate more than half a million dollars in revenue annually over the next three years. As a result, full-time university students will receive a city bus pass at a discounted price as part of their tuition. The academic year rate for a bus pass will rise to $184.08 in September, up from $177, and further increase to $191.44, in 2018-2019 and to $199.10 in 2019-2020. The city estimates it will bring in $543,956 in revenue this year, $565,705 the following year and $588,340 in the third year of the agreement. A similar agreement has also been in place with Canadore College.

Councillor Mark King says the transit system in the city really relies on students, so this was an important thing to get done. King says a lot of the ridership is students moving from the McKeown area to the college and university and back. He says that’s a substantial part of the whole transit system, and was one of the main focuses when they re-jigged the system a few months ago. King says they had also discussed potentially adding smaller buses to the fleet in the city, but determined it was best financially to stay with the regular sized buses.
