Time running out for talks at YMCA of Northeastern Ontario

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union representing YMCA workers in North Bay and Sudbury says time is running out to reach a first contract. OPSEU has accused management at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario of dragging its heels in negotiations.

Representatives for the YMCA say they’re disappointed in OPSEU’s tactics. President and CEO of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario Kim Kanmacher says the media release from earlier this week diminishes the progress the parties have made to date. Kanmacher says the YMCA remains optimistic and confident the parties can conclude a first collective agreement hastily.

Diana Demery-Hepinstall, the chair of the OPSEU bargaining team, called it ironic that an agency that is supposed to be providing employment support is risking a labour disruption over what she calls refusal to come to fair terms on working conditions. Demery-Hepinstall says these workers are just asking for fair treatment and a reasonable workload. She says this employer just doesn’t seem to be interested in working on a solution.

OPSEU was certified as the bargaining agent for YMCA of Northeastern Ontario workers on July 13th, 2016. OPSEU gave notice in October to bargain a first collective agreement, and both parties agreed to begin negotiations on December 12th, 2016.
