One charged after collision on bypass leaves one dead

The OPP has released the name of the motorist who was killed in a collision at the Highway 11/17 bypass and Seymour Street.

The victim has been identified as Travis Douglas Wright, 36, of the Township of McNab/Braeside, Ont.

On November 28, at 9:00pm, members of the North Bay OPP Detachment responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 at Seymour Street in the City of North Bay.

Police say a passenger vehicle that was southbound on Seymour Street was struck by a pickup truck that was travelling westbound on the Hwy 11/17 bypass.

North Bay Fire and Emergency Service had responded and were assisting the victim. Upon arrival, police were told by witnesses the driver of the pickup truck had left the scene on foot. North Bay police located the pickup truck driver nearby.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at the hospital

The driver of the pickup truck, 28-year-old Joseph Edward Fitzgerald of Huntsville, Ont., has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle – Causing Death contrary to section 255(3) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Fail to Stop at the Scene of an Accident contrary to section 252 of the CC
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest contrary to section 270(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is being held in custody for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice today in North Bay.
