Death of Tess Richey ruled a homicide

In an already heartbreaking week for the Richey family, their sorrow intensifies.

Late Friday, Toronto police have announced that the death of Tess Richey has been ruled a homicide.

After initially releasing a statement, following the discovery of Richey’s body on Wednesday outside a building undergoing construction in the Village area of Toronto, that Richey’s death was not deemed suspicious, post-mortem results have changed that determination.

Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Graham Gibson said in a statement released late Friday that the homicide division has taken over the investigation as “neck compression,” has been determined as the cause of death.

Tess Richey died in the days leading up to what would have been her 23rd birthday. She attended school in North Bay and had been living in the GTA. She was the youngest of five sisters who rallied, along with their mother, in a social media campaign and physical search of the Church Street and Wellesley Street East area of the Village in an effort to find Tess after she went missing early last Saturday morning.
