Investigation into the murder of Tess Richey begins

A memorial shrine of flowers and candles has been placed at the top of the stairwell above the location that Tess Richey’s body was found last week.

That stairwell, part of an abandoned building under construction at Church and Dundonald in the Village section of Toronto, and where Richey’s own mother found a lifeless Tess, has now become a crime scene.

Late Friday, police announced that Toronto Homicide would take the case over. What had initially been deemed a case of drunken misadventure suddenly changed, following the filing of a post-mortem report. The despair of the close-knit family deepened as the cause of death was altered from “accident” to “homicide,” due to strangulation.

Family members were to have met with homicide detectives Sunday in Toronto. Tess Richey, who would have turned 23 last week, grew up in North Bay and her mother and four sisters either live in or have ties to North Bay.

Over the weekend, Postmedia outlets reported police are looking into information that Richey had worked as an escort, a revelation that one of Tess Richey’s sisters denied to MyNorthBayNow.com, and another sister refuted in an interview with the North Bay Nugget.

The Toronto Sun is reporting that there are at least five visible security cameras in the vicinity of where Richey was found. Investigators are attempting to secure and review those tapes and have been re-interviewing witnesses who had spoken to police before the case had been ruled a homicide.

MyNorthBayNow.com will update this story as details become available.
