Funding for career training opportunities for women

25 programs, including one at Canadore College, that provide career training opportunities for women are receiving provincial funding.

Up to $8.9 million is coming from the Women’s Economic Security Program.

The province says the program helps women gain the skills, knowledge, and experience they need to find a job, start a business and achieve financial independence.

Training is offered in four streams including: the skilled trades, entrepreneurship, information technology and general employment.

Locally, the program includes Canadore’s General Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship.

“Through the Women’s Economic Security Program, we are helping women access in demand careers, achieve financial independence and succeed in sectors that are vital to the economy,” says Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services.

The province says to help remove barriers to participating, the training programs include additional supports such as providing meals throughout the training day, transportation to and from training, and support finding child care.

Wraparound supports, including mental health and well-being referrals, are also available for women, including those who have experienced or are at risk of intimate partner violence.

Officials say since 2018, the Women’s Economic Security Program has helped over 2,600 women secure employment, become entrepreneurs, or pursue further training and education.
