The City of North Bay’s senior of the year for 2024 is Hariett Madigan.
Mayor Peter Chirico bestowed the honour on Tuesday night with a standing ovation given in the council chamber.
He says Madigan has been a driving force in the community for decades with the Heritage Gardeners, Living Fit, Clean Green Beautiful North Bay, Communities in Bloom, as an honourary colonel with the Royal Canadian Air Force and more.
“The items that she has been involved with in this city inspire and should inspire each one of us,” Chirico says. “I could go on for probably hours as to what Hariett has inspired this community to do. But not only does she talk it, she does it. That’s the key right there.”
Madigan humbly accepted the award with plenty of fellow gardeners and volunteers in the crowd.
“I consider myself a seed planter,” she says. “I can sow a seed, but I need a lot of support to make things grow. I want to say I accept this award on behalf of all of you.”
Madigan also says it’s all generations that deserve recognition.
She says you can’t lose when you put the community first to do good things and follow it up with your heart.
