Rotarians walking to eradicate polio

Thursday is World Polio Day and Rotary members in North Bay are taking action to raise awareness, funds, and support to end the vaccine-preventable disease.

Officials say even though the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9%, it still threatens children in parts of the world.

Rotarians will be taking part in a walk on Thursday, starting at 10 am at the city’s splash pad.

“The public are welcome to participate in the walk and/or to make a donation to the Rotary Club of North Bay,” says Ghislaine Côté, walk coordinator.  “[We] request their contribution be designated to the PolioPlus fund.”

Rotary says polio anywhere is a threat everywhere, and members from North Bay have raised funds over the years to end the paralyzing virus.

Internationally, Rotary has contributed more than US $2.7 billion to fight polio and countless volunteer hours since launching its PolioPlus program in 1985.
