Troops prevail after wild third period versus the Wolves

The North Bay Battalion won 6-5 in overtime over Sudbury on Sunday at Memorial Gardens.

Tied at two heading into the final frame, it was a wild third period with six goals, including five within a span of five minutes.

The Troops’ took a 4-2 lead before the Wolves stormed back with three goals of their own to go up 5-4.

The Battalion would then tie the game late in period.

“These guys don’t quit, ever.  It’s a really good strength of ours,” says Ryan Oulahen, coach and assistant GM. “That’s a fragile moment right there when they (Sudbury) not only tie it then take the lead on us.  Whoa.  Not sure sometimes where that’s going to go but we were able to settle it down, continue to make our push and we may have even been better because of it.”

Captain Owen Van Steensel bookended the Troops’ goals, scoring the opening marker and the game-winner in overtime.

Reyth Smith, Ethan Procyszyn, Stepan Chukharev and Jacob LeBlanc also scored for North Bay in the win.

Oulahen says every point matters when you face off against a division rival.

“We play them eight times and sometimes it dictates what happens in the division and the conference.  We learned that over the last couple years.  They’re massive,” he says.

The Battalion are back in action Thursday at home to Guelph.
