North Bay Police constable Sue Solman is a Heroes Beyond the Badge recipient.

The third-generation police officer was honoured Tuesday by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

Officials say the award recognizes excellence in Ontario policing that goes beyond the individual or team’s duties.

Cst. Solman, who was sworn-in in 2002, was recognized for her years of dedicated service to the people of North Bay, her leadership of the North Bay Police Services Mobile Crisis Team, and her membership on the North Bay Sexual Assault Review Committee.

“Constable Solman strives towards helping officers understand the signs/symptoms to look for when attending mental health calls and how to communicate effectively with hospital staff to ensure that those vulnerable individuals get the help they need,” states a release.  “She’s engaged in multiple working groups in North Bay and genuinely cares for the community members she encounters in her role and does what she can to see them succeed.”

Officials say in addition to helping the most vulnerable members of the North Bay community, she holds space for other officers to come and talk out things they encounter on the road, creating a safe place for a lot of people to feel heard before they returned to their duties.

Her grandfather served as a member of the OPP and her father retired as a Sergeant with the North Bay Police Service.
