Flood watch issued for parts of the watershed

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the Mattawa River downstream of the Hurdman Dam to the Ottawa River.

This as a flood watch previously issued for Chippewa Creek has ended and a flood outlook continues for the rest of the North Bay–Mattawa watershed, including Chippewa Creek.

Officials say snowmelt in tributaries to Lake Nipissing and the Ottawa River, combined with recent and forecast rain is contributing to increasing water levels.

They say localized flooding is possible in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, meantime, says a Flood Watch is in effect for the Upper Ottawa River at the Town of Mattawa and a Flood Watch for the Tomiko River watershed has been extended.

“Residents in the Upper Ottawa River/Mattawa area and Tomiko River watersheds should keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around rivers and streams,” states a release.  “Recent and forecasted rainfall in these areas is expected to increase already high-water levels and flows which could lead to flooding and sustained flooding where it’s already occurring.”

Unless updated or extended, both bulletins will expire on May 6, 2025, at 4 pm.
