Honouring the Algonquin Regiment

A couple of upcoming events in North Bay are helping recognize the Algonquin Regiment.

The city’s Municipal Heritage Committee will unveil a plaque on Saturday at the corner of Algonquin Avenue and Jane Street, recognizing the original site of the Algonquin Regiment War Memorial.

For many years, members of the regiment would gather there to honour those who served and sacrificed during the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan.

The memorial was relocated to Memorial Park in 2022.

Of note, Klock Avenue was renamed Algonquin in 1948 to honour the regiment, which is marking its 125 anniversary this weekend.

On Monday, a special declaration will be signed at city hall with the mayors of North Bay, Timmins and Steenbergen, Netherlands.

The Dutch community was liberated by the Algonquin Regiment during the Second World War.

“This event honours the profound legacy of the Algonquin Regiment and its deep ties to our city,” says Mayor Peter Chirico.

The city says it also formally recognizes the lasting bonds of friendship and remembrance shared between the three communities.
