Dog attack leads to charges

City police say two people from North Bay have been charged after a man was attacked by a couple of dogs last week.

The North Bay Police Service says the incident happened last Tuesday afternoon in the 1200 block of Algonquin Avenue.

They say their investigation found the man was attacked by two dogs as he approached an office building and fell to the ground.

According to police, the owners were able to get control of the dogs, which were on leashes while the victim later received medical treatment for his injuries.

Officers later identified a man and woman and charged them under the Dog Owners Liability Act, for failing to prevent the dogs from attacking.

“Under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act, dog owners have a legal responsibility to exercise reasonable precautions to prevent the dog from attacking or biting a person or other domestic animal,” says Jeff Warner, city police Inspector of Operations. “The owners can be held accountable with fines upwards of $10,000, jail time or both, depending on the extent of any injuries caused.”

He adds City of North Bay by-laws prohibit people from allowing their gogs to run at large.

“Dog owners are reminded that the injuries caused by a sudden attack can be severe and result in lifelong trauma for the victim,” says Warner. “Dogs should be kept under control at all times.”

Police say the owners of the dogs, which have a court appearance at a later date, and the victim were not known to each other.
