Tariff mitigation efforts underway with new arena project

So far, the city says the tariff war with the United States has not had an impact on the new Community and Recreation Centre project.

A staff report on the project is coming to council Tuesday night.

“Staff continue to monitor expenditures closely,” states the report from David Jackowski, Manager of Special Projects.  “The US trade war poses potential risks to the project budget due to its dynamic and unpredictable nature.”

The report says proactive measures taken to mitigate tariff-related risks include:

  • Identifying exposures such as assessing supply chain vulnerabilities to potential tariffs.
  • Sourcing materials from alternative suppliers less impacted by trade restrictions.
  • Securing critical materials in advance to lock in costs to avoid future price increases.

“These efforts have been effective, as no tariff-related costs have been incurred to date,” states the report.

It also says there have been some minimal extra costs, about $8,200, due to site preparation with final measurements and invoicing for groundwork to be completed by the end of May.

In terms of construction, the report says the project is on track with project complete still projected in August 2026.

After site preparation started in December, micropile cap installations were completed with the pouring of footings ongoing.

Next milestones will include completion of footings and foundation walls followed by the start of structural framing this summer.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) will also be issued to select a food services vendor at the facility.

The city will also be meeting with representatives from the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame, to discuss a possible recognition area in the main lobby.
