Council unanimously approves ‘The George Maroosis Parkette’

The downtown parkette at Algonquin, Main and Cassells streets is being renamed to honour a long-time city councillor and businessman.

Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to name the parkette after George Maroosis, who passed away in November 2023.

Councillor Lana Mitchell knew and worked with Maroosis for nearly 40 years.

“I watched him work hard with people to create childcare, housing and employment opportunities for the citizens of North Bay,” she said, fighting through tears.  “[He] truly placed value on people from all walks of life, respected everyone’s point of view and never judged people.  I’m proud to move this motion that recognizes an individual who served his community in so many ways.”

Several councillors shared memories, including Mark King, whose father Don served on council with Maroosis.

He says Maroosis also asked him to take over as chair of the District of Social Service Administration Board.

“I was certainly frightened by the thought of doing that,” King says. “But I did, over time, accept that position and through his guidance, it helped me greatly in that position. “

Mayor Peter Chirico says Maroosis cared about the general public.

“He cared about the people that didn’t have a voice, and he made sure that he was that voice,” Chirico says.

City staff will set up a plaque renaming the parkette.
