Roller Derby season begins

A doubleheader of games kicks off the roller derby season locally this weekend.

The Nipissing Roller Derby Team plays Toronto’s Hogtown team at 2 pm on Saturday at the Burk’s Falls Arena.

That’s followed, at 4 pm, by a matchup between Hell’s Belles from Georgina taking on Nickel City from Sudbury.

“Our team is pumped for the derby season to begin,” says Harley Twin, Coaching Committee Co-Chair, Nipissing Roller Derby.  “We’ve been training hard and practicing new drills. We can’t wait to take on Toronto’s Hogtown roller derby team. We’re hopeful for some fast feet and big hits out there on the track.”

Tickets are $10 a person at the door with kids 10 and under free.

The Nipissing team will also be traveling to Ottawa, Guelph, and Simcoe for games this season, then wrapping up the campaign in Callander in September with a number of events lined up.

“I joined because the sport was always interesting to me as a full contact women’s sport,” says Princess Slaya, skater for 2.5 years.  “I was also drawn by how supportive and inclusive the sport is for players of all ages and abilities. I love how fast paced and dynamic it is and how everyone is there to have fun and enjoy the game regardless of which team they’re on.”

Officials say they also have a ‘fresh meat’ derby program to train new skaters.
