Funding to support area emergency departments

Three area hospitals are receiving over a million dollars to support their emergency departments.

Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing, announced $814,000 for the North Bay Regional Health Centre and $100,000 for the Mattawa Hospital.

West Nipissing General Hospital is receiving $150,000.

Fedeli says the money supports increasing front-line services, maintaining program stability, and enhancing services for people of all ages seeking emergency care.

“Our emergency departments and health-care professionals work tirelessly to attend to the needs of patients in our community,” says Fedeli. “The Ontario government continues to invest in our local hospitals, so they can reduce emergency room wait times and deliver care close to home.”

Paul Heinrich, North Bay Regional Health Centre President and CEO, says they welcome the funding.

“We are optimistic that this funding, combined with investments in alternate level of care and other community-based services, will collectively help to bring down wait times and improve service access at our hospital,” he says.

Tanya Belanger, President & CEO, Mattawa Hospital says the funding allowed for the creation of a full-time nurse leader in their emergency department.

“This has directly enhanced our department’s ability to reduce wait times, improve patient flow and ultimately provide better care to the people of Mattawa and surrounding areas,” says Belanger.

The funding comes from the Emergency Department Pay-for-Results Program (EDP4R) for the 2025-26 year.
