“We are on schedule, and we are on budget.”
That update on construction of the new $63 million Community and Recreation Centre from David Jackowski, the city’s Manager of Special Projects.
Work is well underway on the Lakeshore Drive facility.
Jackowski says organics have been taken out of the building footprint area, blasting is complete on the site with the rock to be used as aggregate and micropyles are complete.
“We are forming and pouring footings and foundation,” says Jackowski. “The next highly visible stage is coming on July 7 and that is when steel begins arriving on site. The anticipated complete date of this project remains August 12, 2026.”
Setting up the steel structure will continue through October.
Meantime, Jackowski says traffic on Lakeshore will be impacted with intersection work between July and November.
He says starting in early July, there will be lane closures during the bulk of the work.
However, sanitary work means they have to completely close the roadway for about two weeks this summer.
“We have to connect services to the new facility and that involves us making a large cut all the way through Lakeshore Drive at about a five metre depth,” says Jackowski.
He adds it’s currently scheduled for July 7-21, but they’re still finalizing details and will be informing residents and businesses in the area, plus setting up signage.
With the project’s budget, Jackowski says $165,000 of contingency has been spent on soil they ran into with a garage facility and additional rock on the site.
He also says most of the tariff risk has been averted by sourcing materials from alternative suppliers and securing material in advance to lock in costs. However, Jackowski says some risk remains around the HVAC system.
