Post-storm evacuation centre now closed in Mattawa

The evacuation centre at the Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa, opened after Saturday’s severe storm, has now closed.

That from Calvin officials who say all evacuees have been reunited with their families, returned home or have been moved to another location. Mattawa Mayor Raymond Belanger says 60 families including 133 people from Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park and about 100 other from Algonquin Park in Kiosk were evacuated to the centre.

In a letter posted on social media, he’s thanking the numerous emergency services, town departments, agencies, businesses, service clubs and volunteers that stepped up to help their neighbours.

“Impressive and grateful are the best words to describe what the Town of Mattawa provided for those in need,” he says.

States of emergency continue in Calvin and Bonfield townships with repairs to roads and infrastructure ongoing in both communities.

Bonfield officials say significant progress has been made.

Calvin officials add they’ve been advised by Emergency Management Ontario that crews are working on the final washout area on Highway 630, with a full opening expected as early as Thursday.

Fire bans are in effect in both Bonfield and Calvin.
