Council is supporting a move to disclose its members’ expenses online.
A motion directing staff to bring forward a Transparency and Accountability By-Law was approved on Tuesday.
“As a member of the current municipal council in the City of North Bay I strongly believe that all members should be held to the same open, transparent and easily accessible reporting of itemized council member’s expenses,” says councillor Lana Mitchell, Chair of Infrastructure and Operations.
Her motion calls for expenses to be posted online on a quarterly and annual basis.
“These detailed expense claims and reports must identify each expense as it relates to city business,” she says. “This standardization, as a routine business practice of open, public disclosure, will ensure public accountability of how all members of council access municipal funds.”
The move will be retroactive to the beginning of this council term.
Staff are expected to report back by the first council meeting in September.
