Decision on future of West Ferris Arena going to overtime

Don’t expect to see any wrecking balls on Gertrude Street just yet.

A committee report that includes moving forward with decommissioning and demolishing West Ferris Arena has been moved back to committee.

This after Tuesday’s council meeting included a public presentation, a councillor wanting to ask about a more detailed cost for a building conditions assessment, and another councillor asking if an amendment to decommission the ice plant only was possible.

Bill Antler made the presentation and called on council to do its due diligence and look at all options before making a final decision.

“What I’d like you to do is take a sober second thought,” he says. “Look at the elements.  Is it really structurally not sound or is it just one part.”

He’d like council to do the building conditions assessment.

“That’s a small investment that could lead to big gains,” says Antler.

Still at City Hall, a motion to increase the next mayor’s remuneration to $115,000, which represents a 35% increase, was withdrawn.

Councillor Gary Gardiner later gave notice he’ll be bringing forward a motion to have staff examine remuneration across northern municipalities for both mayor and councillor positions.
