Mayor Peter Chirico announces he won’t seek re-election

North Bay will have a new mayor this fall.

Peter Chirico announced Friday he won’t be seeking re-election.

He says after careful consideration, he believes the time is right to conclude his service in elected office and allow new leadership to step forward.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community and for the trust that residents and supporters have placed in me,” says Chirico. “Serving in this role has been an honor, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together in this term and four terms on Council. I remain committed to supporting our community and working on its behalf through the remainder of my term.”

Along with serving out the rest of the term he says he will help ensure a smooth transition to the next generation of leadership.

The deadline for nominations for the next council closed on Friday afternoon.

They’ll be certified today (Aug. 24).

The city’s website says five people are seeking the mayor’s seat with 25 councillor hopefuls.

Election day is Monday, October 26.
