178 km/h.  That’s how fast the North Bay OPP says a vehicle was being driven in a posted 100 km/h zone on Highway 11 in Trout Creek at approximately 4:15 pm on Monday.

Provincial Police say an officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the Powassan area at the time when they saw a northbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

As a result of an investigation, a 31-year-old North Bay resident was charged with stunt driving and using an unauthorized plate.

“The North Bay OPP reminds motorists that speeding continues to be a leading contributing factor in fatal and serious-injury collisions on Ontario roads,” states a release. “Excessive speed reduces reaction time, increases stopping distances, and significantly increases the risk of a collision.”

The accused has a future court appearance in North Bay.

Meantime, another North Bay resident was charged with stunt driving after an incident on Sunday.

Provincial Police say it involved a vehicle performing a burnout on the 11/17 bypass, with a 23-year-old charged.

Both driver’s licences were suspended for 30-days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days.
