Cell phone return scam warning from police

City police are warning about a scam to steal newly delivered cell phones and tablets.

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) says fraudsters are using personal or account information to order a device through a legitimate service provider. They say victims then receive a call from someone claiming to be from their provider, and may say the wrong device was shipped, or a promotion was applied incorrectly.

They then send a prepaid shipping label that may direct a returned device to an address controlled by the fraudster.

Police say victims may lose the device and potentially become responsible for its cost.

Fraud Prevention Tips:
· Verify before returning a device
· Contact your provider directly
· Check your account

NBPS encourages the public to report suspicious activity and remain alert. If you believe you’ve been a victim of fraud, please call 705-472-1234 to speak with an officer or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Your assistance can make a difference in ongoing investigations.
