North Bay residents gathered outside City Hall to commemorate the lives lost in the Orlando shooting.
A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night and organizer Tracy Davis says crisis brings people together no matter where they live. She says these events touch people so deeply and they need to connect with others. Davis says people were reaching out to her on Sunday after the news broke about the shooting.
She says people were in need of having a place to grieve and to be with other people, so they put the plans together at 6:00pm Monday to hold the vigil on Tuesday evening. She says social media can be a wonderful tool when you need to reach people for a purpose like this.
Davis says there needs to be change and people have to be serious about it. She says we need to put the things we think about into action so change can happen. That means living a life full of compassion and hopefulness.
Davis says they wanted to send that message of hopefulness through this event.
She says seeing all the people participating shows they are getting their message across, especially with the younger crowd. She says they are pretty determined to change the world and everyone should be listening to them.
Davis also says the fact they could hold this event in peace is not lost on them and they are reminded of how lucky they are to live in Canada. She says things aren’t perfect, but people are grateful and blessed to live here. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to be done and she wants people to know there is a lot of change that still needs to happen, and it needs to start now.
Davis says we need to do things that create change in our own community and the first step is leaning on each other for support.
