Extreme Journey leads St. Catharines man through North Bay

Six years ago Neil Hammell wanted to take his own life, but now he is devoted to helping others in his own community.

The St. Catharines native is currently on an 11,000 kilometre journey through Ontario to raise awareness about poverty and mental illness. Hammell passed through North Bay Thursday and says the reception has been overwhelming since he left his hometown on April 22nd.

He says he is not looking to raise money for any specific charity; he just wants to raise awareness through this walk.  He plans to go all the way to Timmins, Ontario before ending his Extreme Journey.

It will take him through 33 cities and towns across Ontario and he is adding daily updates to his Extreme Journey Facebook page.

He says if you know someone that could use the help, then donate to them personally.

Hammell says he’s always open to discussing issues with people that may not have anywhere else to turn. He says he wants to help people and they can reach out to him through his Facebook page.
