By the spring or summer of next year, the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s new specialized forensic female unit is scheduled to be up and running. The unit will house women over 18 years of age that have been found unfit to stand trial due to a mental disorder.
It was announced back in 2015 that the hospital would be the location for the specialized unit, which would be one of two in the province. The health centre received $3.7 million to develop and operate an eight-bed unit.
Women who will be referred to the unit will come from partnered forensic hospitals throughout the province. These women are expected to have mental health disorders, behaviour challenges, and will be a significant risk to public safety.
