Taffy Pull this weekend

With spring here, the area sees another tradition, the annual Taffy Pull organized by the South River-Machar Agricultural Society.  The popular regional event is set for this Saturday.  Normally by this time of year, most maple syrup producers are well into another maple syrup season.  But the recent cold snap has delayed 2017 production a bit.  However Ron McLaren, who is the co-host of this year’s event, says he and his wife Meredith will ensure there is syrup for this year’s taffy pull.  For the past few years the taffy pull has been held in the village.  But this year it’s back at the McLaren Farm where Ron McLaren and Meredith operate the family-run maple syrup business.

A new event at this year’s taffy pull is the Bunker Hill Egg Toss championship.  Saturday’s event also features wagon rides to the sugar bush where the sap is gathered from maple trees to eventually become maple syrup.  The public can also get tours of the sugar shack.  In addition there are photo opportunities with bunnies and kids can have their faces painted.    There is no admission charge to the taffy pull.  The McLaren Farm is located at 42 Bunker Hill Road and the event runs from 11am to 2pm.
