The Kiwanis Club of Nipissing has named Tom Hedican as their Citizen of the Year for 2017 for his work in the community. Hedican and his family wanted to do something unselfish around Christmas time and ‘give back’ to the community, and the rest is a part of North Bay history. Hedican founded the Coach4Food program back in 2005. He says he’s been fortunate to receive several accolades in his years promoting Coach4Food, but he’s truly humbled by this recognition.

Hedican, a professional hockey goaltending consultant, was appointed as Honourary Colonel of 51 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron with 22 Wing in September of 2014. Coach4Food has now partnered with the Ontario Hockey League’s Shutout Hunger Program, where OHL coaches donate their time and coaching talents to minor hockey teams in return for donations to their local food banks. By 2015, the program eclipsed the 1-million-pound mark of food donated, more than 500,000 pounds of food has been raised in North Bay.

Hedican continues to quietly assist when he sees a need, including earlier this year when he used social media to set up a GoFundMe page to help a homeless family in need. In a single day, he helped raise $3,500. Kiwanis President Ralph Celentano says there were many deserving nominations, but Hedican’s work has inspired neighbourhoods, teams, groups and even leagues of people across Ontario. Celentano says amassing one million pounds of food for the many food banks across the area and across Ontario has changed how they educate young people about how to give back to their communities.

Celentano says there are more stories yet to be told, and they will gather to celebrate Hedican on Thursday, May 25th at the Ramada Pinewood Park Resort. Ticket sales and table reservations will be managed by Kiwanis members including Chris Mayne (chris@maynetravel.com) and Ralph Celentano (ralphc@vianet.ca) starting next week.
