DIA’s Win This Space promotion Part 2 of 2

(Editor’s Note:  The first part to this story appeared on the My North Bay Now website on April 25th)

The Downtown Improvement Area in North Bay is hopeful a lot of entrepreneurs respond to the Win This Space promotion.  In it, a business person has the chance to win a year’s free rent at an empty store front in North Bay’s downtown up to a maximum of $15,000.  Co-chair of the promotion, Geoff Richardson, says once participants submit their entries, judges will pick the top 10 and that group will get help fleshing out their business plan over several weeks from professionals.  DIA chairman Bob Alger says this is one of the best ideas the DIA has promoted in a long time.  Alger says it will help contribute to a healthy downtown.

North Bay is borrowing the promotion from Peterborough and London.  Jeff Serran, executive director of the DIA, says so many people took part in the promotion in the south that it produced several businesses.   “When London ran the promotion, there was only one winner,” Serran said.  “But the experience for the other (competitors) was so great that four of them opened businesses.  So where they had only the one winner, they ended up with four new businesses.  The four that didn’t win obviously felt strongly about their business plans for them to go ahead and open their own businesses.   Maybe if it worked for them, it can also work for us.”   Serran says he hears from his DIA counterparts in London and Peterborough that their respective Win This Space programs are very successful.  At the local level, the deadline to submit entries is May 15th.  The full details are available online at www.winthisspacedowntown.com
