Forest fire activity remains low

This year will no doubt go down as one of the lowest forest fire seasons for Northeastern Ontario.  The region has seen only a fraction of the forest fires it normally experiences.  Regular rain this year has kept new fire starts to a minimum with many fires one or two hectares in size.  The last forest fire to breakout in the northeast was September 2nd.  Northeastern Ontario has only experienced 171 forest fires to date and they’ve burned less than 4,200 hundred hectares of land.  As the weather cools, the Ministry of Natural Resources has scaled back its forest fire fighting compliment.  Resources have been reduced by 75 percent from the peak summer period.
