North Bay and District Labour Council hosting planning meeting for annual Pride event

The North Bay and District Labour Council has begun planning for an annual community based Pride event. President Henri Giroux says they’re excited to get things going in Nipissing, and in the city of North Bay. The group will be holding a planning meeting on Monday, June 5th at 5:30pm at Nipissing University in room A244.

Giroux says so many people across the region have encouraged labour to facilitate a Pride planning strategy, so that’s what they’re doing. In a release, the council states that unions have a rich history when it comes to teaching and promoting human rights, and LGBTQ equity is no exception. Over the years unions have built into their democratic structures ways for equity seeking groups to have important and lasting decision-making power. Because unions believe in social equity, the council says it makes perfect sense that they help with events like Pride.

The council has put out an invite to anyone interested in starting something for the diverse community in North Bay and the surrounding areas. Giroux says they hope the Labour Council will eventually become a regular community contributor to an annual Pride event, but for now, they’ll take the lead in planning.
