Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli has introduced a private members bill called the Ontario Forestry Industry Revitalization Act, which will look at the height of wood frame buildings. The bill proposes amendments to the Ontario Building Code to allow for wood-frame construction in buildings up to 12 storeys.
Fedeli says it would provide a boost to Northern Ontario’s forestry industry and create jobs, as well as help Southern Ontario meet growth and density targets as laid out in the Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan. Fedeli also added it will provide a reduced carbon footprint in the construction of mid-rise buildings, so it’s a win-win for the province.
Similar changes were made in British Columbia and Quebec, which had an immediate impact on their economies. Fedeli is urging all parties to support this piece of legislation, because it has the potential to have a positive impact across multiple sectors across the province if passed.
