Health Unit will be on the move later this summer

The Health Unit offices in North Bay will be moving to a new building at 345 Oak Street West later this summer. The new building has been in the planning stages for many years to address inadequate and inefficient work space within North Bay. Officials say they currently provide programs and services out of one main building, plus two additional office sites in the city. The new building will enable them to provide better service to the public and appropriate accommodation for staff and programs. The branch offices in Parry Sound and Burk’s Falls won’t be affected by the move and will continue to operate as usual.

When the move will take place isn’t official right now, but more information will be released when the date gets closer. The new location is accessible by all bus routes and is close to bike and walking paths, and there’s also parking available. Land for the construction of a new building was purchased by the Health Unit back in 2014 with the majority approval of its member municipalities. The project was approved with a maximum cost of $20,000,000, and to date all costing and estimates are within that budget.

Officials hope that being closer to the waterfront, and bike and walking paths, will promote wellness and physical activity for staff, clients and stakeholders. They say the design is welcoming and functional, which will allow them to offer more services like food preparation and education classes. Officials hope that the new building will help revitalize the downtown core, and encourage the public to utilize their programs.
