Relay for Life takes over the athletic field at 22 Wing tonight

It’s a big day in the local fight against cancer, as the Relay for Life event will be taking over the athletic field up at the Canadian Forces base. The event gets going at 6:00pm, and runs until 11:00pm. All the funds raised will go towards cancer research. Shuttle buses between designated areas around Airport Road will be bringing people to the site, and parking around the area will also be provided.

A report came out this week showing that almost one in every two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Local Canadian Cancer Society Manager, Gil Pharand says everyone has or will be affected by cancer, and events like these are important to raise funds for research. Pharand says to that end, the participation numbers are looking really good so far. He says around 45 teams have already signed up, with around 350 participants registered. Anyone who’s still interested in signing up can go so right up to the start of the race. The entry fee is $15 per person.

Pharand joked that there’s never any weather concerns because the sky always opens for the event, but there is a chance of showers today. He says they have such a dedicated group of volunteers, and participants who always managed to make it out. Pharand says it doesn’t matter if it’s raining because people come out and make a difference in the fight against cancer.
